For all those dubstep fans, there is a song not long released by Example and Skream. It has now become the soundtrack to our season. The song is called Shot Yourself In The Foot, although not a brilliant song, it is fitting of Arsenal at the moment.
When 2-0 against your arch-rivals, you should be looking to add to your own goals tally, really rub salt in the wounds. What do we do? We collapse, and lose 3-2. At home no less. 4-0 up against a newly promoted team at half time, well it should be a doddle seeing out the game. Not Arsenal. Instead we implode and draw 4-4. Just not good enough.
Yesterday we can add to those games. 1-0, we score our goal in the 98th, with only 30 seconds or so remaining. We don't win the game. Very very bizarre.
I'm gonna start by defending the referee. I thought he had an alright game, both were penalties, although both were soft. Claims Lucas made the most of it, well yeah he did. Did those same people not see Cesc wrap his leg around the Liverpool defender and wait for contact? Stop blaming everyone and everything but the main culprits guys. We scored in the 98th minute, with 30 seconds remaining. Plus another 30 seconds or so added on for goals scored. In that time, Liverpool attacked. And won a free kick in an excellent position, where the referee is more than entitled to play advantage and allow the free kick to go ahead. Fair enough. Surely we should be able to see this out, last kick of the game an all... Free kick blocked, and looping in the air, all Eboue had to do was shadow Lucas away and surely the ref would of blew the whistle for full time. Instead, Eboue needlessly bundled Lucas over. It was maybe a dive, but Eboue gave Lucas all the incentive to dive. Silly silly defending. Up until that point I though Eboue had a good game, with that challenge he threw away 100 minutes of good work.
Right, onto the game itself. This game had an end of season, meaningless, ''my mind is on the beach'' feel to it. Considering a win would of drawn us closer to Man Utd and asked questions of them after their semi final defeat, it was painful to see. No real lack of urgency, no real desire to score. We still tried passing through an army of Liverpool shirts. It was easy to defend against. Koscielny hit the bar, and van Persie had an effort well saved by Reina, but apart from that, we didn't test the Liverpool goal keeper.
There is a huge sense of panic surrounding Arsenal. The fans have it, and transfer it on to the team. A misplaced pass it met with a louder groan than a goal would be met with a louder cheer. I very rarely manage to get to the Emirates, but if I pay the amount 60,000 or so pay, I would be cheering on my team, you know...supporting them.
I still love Arsenal. No performance will ever stop that. Yesterday we had the chance to assert big pressure onto United, instead we squandered it. Again. Just like Blackburn, and Sunderland, and West Brom. Maybe some of these players aren't as good as we think.
Ramblings of Wenger out are making soundwaves again. Do me a favour. I refuse to see how he is to blame for players not seeing out games. Once the whistle is blown, it's up to the players. Playing for Arsenal, they need to develop that winning mentality.
As for our Premier League ambitions, well I think we have blown it. There is a small amount of games left to swing a 6 point deficit, we have to win our games, and hope United slip up too. It could happen, but there is a very very slim chance. We face Tottenham in our next game. I am more confident of winning that game than I am of beating United at the Emirates. Our away form has been pretty good this year, and we need to keep it up. We can't have that lot doing the double over us.
A very damning post today I grant you that, but hopefully I've made my points well and don't make too much of a hassle. Thanks for reading, and let's look to the future. We are so so close to being a great team.
Sadly, yet so far!
You've got it wrong, we did'nt score in the 108th minute, we scored in the 98th minute...... which was at the end of the designated 8 minutes of added time. Liverpool got their penalty in the 101st minute..... a full 3 minutes after the game should have been over. I'm not looking for excuses but for fuck sake, the ref got it wrong. The gunners should have finished the game off during the 90 minutes obviously, but Liverpool had a decent game. When injury time is specified then Refs should stick to it, as far as I'm concerned, 90 + 8 = 98 not 101. Players should play to the final whistle and all that, yes, but imagine playing that game and see the ref blatantly go over the specified time by 3/4 minutes!
ReplyDeleteadjusted the post. but I stand by what I said, the ref had every right to allow play to go on. I believe it was a minimum of 8 minutes added on.
ReplyDeleteI think that cesc at least made our penalty look like a foul, i don't think theirs was a penalty in a month of sundays, disgraceful dive by lucas no matter what anyone says, i don't think Eboue is to blame for that at all, you are allowed to brush another player in the penalty area, it wasn't even a push!
ReplyDeleteThat said, everything else in your post i absolutely agree with, shouldn't be blaming time added on, the ref can add 30 secs if a goal is scored in injury time, plus he could argue that he added time for our over the top celebration.
That is fine, we all have different opinions which we are entitled to. I believe both players won the penalties, as opposed to the other team conceding a penalty, if that is understandable?
ReplyDeletethanks for commenting anyways, always great to hear other peoples opinions.
