Arsenal 1-0 Udinese; a slender lead due to the lack of cutting edge

Morning all

For four minutes last night, I was delighted watching the game. For that's how long it took for Theo Walcott to find the net for our first goal of the season. It was a very important goal, the crowd settled and the tension eased.

Many are saying the team last night had a Carling Cup feel about it, and I'd have to agree. That is how threadbare our squad is right now with suspensions, injuries and departures.

It was our first choice back five, and they kept a clean sheet. That was mainly down to Szczesny who made numerous wonderful saves and some timely interventions from Song and Vermaelen. It was again in the final third where we lacked creativity and our passing wasn't as crisp as it can be. Wenger, watching on from the stands as a result of a suspension, must have seen this and will look to rectify the problem. It may be down to lack of match sharpness, but our problems lie deeper than that.

Pre match, on Sky Sports, Wenger seemed bullish about spending money. Genuinely, I feel we will see a few high level signings, be it a Juan Mata or a Eden Hazard, and a Phil Jagielka or a Gary Cahill.

There were a few positives last night, Carl Jenkinson handled himself well and Emmanuel Frimpong looked like the player we all think he will be. We might just need these players in the next few games so let's hope they continue. Wojciech Szczesny surely dispelled murmurings that we need a dominant keeper, as he was again excellent, making crucial saves. Theo Walcott was very fired up, worked hard, scored a goal, maybe could of had a few more but was overall impressive.

Marouane Chamakh is starting to become a real worry. I've been sticking up for the Moroccan lately, but he seems totally bereft of confidence. I hope he starts to find his feet soon else we will be in trouble. What I don't understand though is the calling for Nicklas Bendtner. Now he wants to leave, he's all of a sudden become a world beater amongst the Gooner faithful. He's stated many times he's wanted out, so why should we keep him? The only solution for me is to bring in another striker. A fantasy option would be a Tevez or a Benzema, which seems as likely as Joey Barton becoming a good person. Rumours doing the rounds this morning link us with Kevin Doyle of Wolves, and I'd have to say I wouldn't be against signing him.

It was a good win last night, a slender lead, but it will do good for morale. With an important few weeks coming up, let's hope we continue grinding out results.
