We're going to Wemberley! It is a great achievement, and would you believe it we are nearing the end of our trophy drought. A cup final against West Ham or Birmingham, and you have to fancy our chances.
We sent out a very strong team, with Denilson, Bendtner and Arshavin coming in for Song, Nasri and Walcott. It showed the intent of Arsene Wenger that this trophy is now important. Straight away it was clear how Ipswich lined up, packing the midfield and defence, and clearing the ball up field at every opportunity. We had few chances in the first half, with Robin van Persie hitting the bar, volleying an effort wide and Bendtner and Fabregas had efforts well saved by the Ipswich keeper. I felt we were suffering from nerves to start with, but as the game progressed, our performance matured.
On the hour mark, we opened the scoring to the delight of 50,000 fans. And it was a beauty. Jack Wilshere, who possibly had his best game in an Arsenal shirt, lofted an awesome pass into the path of Niklas Bendtner, whose touch and turn inside the defender we're also brilliant. He then had the confidence to curl the ball past the keeper. Brilliant. That goal meant everything to the players, but even more so to the fans. Credit to the players, they stayed calm throughout and carried on playing their fancy football.
The second soon followed, a bullet header from the again impressive Laurent Koscielny, doubled our lead and sent us Wembley bound. It was a matter of keep ball now, and for us, that is what we do best. Our third was a lovely break away goal, Denilson winning the ball and passing to Fabregas, who found Arshavin. He drove towards the Ipswich goal and his reverse pass neatly found our captain who finished off proceedings. Jubilant atmosphere at the Grove.
It was a big night for our players, and they delivered. We have a night to remember at the Emirates, and when we look back in years to come, who knows how big this game could prove to be. While many expected us to go through, it is still pleasing the boys achieved it.
Well gooners, look forward to a day out at Wembley. Hopefully it is first of three outings this year!!
Thanks for reading.
